The First Fully Adjustable Lens For Cataract & RLE Patients

For cataract and refractive lens exchange (RLE) patients, the Light Adjustable Lens is the first and only intraocular lens (IOL) implant whose power can be fine-tuned post-surgery. Crafted from unique, silicon-based, photosensitive material, the lens responds to gentle, patterned UV light treatments performed right in our office. This allows us to achieve remarkably clear, and personalized vision for each of our patients.

What To Expect From The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) Procedure

The process of implanting the Light Adjustable Lens begins with undergoing either a cataract or refractive lens exchange procedure. During either of these procedures, your natural lens is removed and replaced with an IOL, like the Light Adjustable Lens. In the two weeks following IOL insertion, your eyes will begin to heal and adapt to your new LAL lenses. This recovery period paves the way for the LAL’s unique advantage: post-surgical customization.

Fine-tuning the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is a painless process achieved using a Light Delivery Device (LDD).

This device emits precisely controlled ultraviolet (UV) light patterns that interact with the lens’ photosensitive material. The LAL reacts to UV light, which allows us to adjust the lens power and sharpness exactly where needed for optimal vision. Patients require between 1 to 3 of these quick (around 90 seconds each) light treatments, spaced 1-2 weeks apart. A final light treatment “locks in” the power of the lens, leaving you with exceptional, long-lasting vision that’s tailored to you. UV protective glasses are worn from the time of surgery until the final lock in treatment.

The adaptability of the LAL is an especially valuable feature for patients who have undergone previous refractive surgery like LASIK, have certain conditions that prevent them from being a candidate for multifocal IOLs, or wish to have monovision after surgery.

Is the Light Adjustable Lens right for me?

The Light Adjustable Lens is great for patients who want a custom solution to reduce their dependence on glasses. However, LAL does require you to come in for the follow-up appointments, and you must be able to wear post-surgery UV-protective glasses until the final “lock-in” light treatment.

Why do I have to wear UV protected glasses?

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is fine-tuned with UV light during your recovery. To prevent accidental adjustments before the final lock-in, we recommend wearing UV-protective glasses for 2-5 weeks after surgery, especially when going outdoors in bright sunlight. The LAL features an “active shield”, which minimizes power shifts, offering peace of mind if you do forget your glasses. But wearing UV glasses is recommended for optimal results.

Can the LAL be adjusted multiple times?

Yes, the LAL can be adjusted multiple times, ensuring it stays aligned with changes in your eyes or lifestyle.

Does insurance cover the Light Adjustable Lens implant?

While insurance plans cover basic lens implants for cataract surgery, the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is considered an advanced technology IOL, and is not often covered by insurance.
